The microorganisms found in AMD include acidophilic prokaryotes, as well as eukaryotic microorganisms. In addition to the well known acidophiles, more recently discovered "moderate acidophiles", i.e. those that live in less acidic (pH 3–6) mine waters, will be highlighted.
We characterized the microbiologically mediated oxidative precipitation of Fe(II) from coalmine-derived acidic mine drainage (AMD) along flow-paths at two sites in northern Pennsylvania.
Characterization of Fe(II) oxidizing bacterial activities and communities at two acidic Appalachian coalmine drainage-impacted sites. ISME J 2:1134–1145. View
Our bacterial diversity study of the wetland cell treating coal mine drainage, demonstrating the prevalence of acidithiobacilli and a relatively low phylogenetic diversity, contrasts with a wider phylogenetic diversity of organisms in acid drainage from metal mines.

Acid mine drainage varies from site to site with respect to geochemical parameters. The geochemical variation is reflected by differing populations of acidophiles that inhabit AMD. Acidophilic microorganisms vary significantly in physiological and metabolic characteristics. The metabolic variations of acidophiles can be exploited in a variety of AMD remediation strategies.
Acidophiles Life in Extremely Acidic Environments Edited by Raquel Quatrini and D. Barrie Johnson ISBN: 978-1-91 (hardback) ISBN: 978-1-91 (ebook) Caister Academic Press https:// Distribution of Acidophilic 10 ... Salar de Gorbea 2.5– ...
Acid resistance of acidophiles is the result of long-term co-evolution and natural selection of acidophiles and their natural habitats, and formed a relatively optimal acid-resistance network in acidophiles. The acid tolerance network of acidophiles could be classified into active and passive mechanisms. The active mechanisms mainly include the proton efflux and …

Microbial life is possible in strongly acidic environments and even at pH values below zero. The low pH of highly acidic environments in volcanic areas and environments associated with metal ore mining is caused by the activities of acidophilic microorganisms that oxidize reduced sulfur compounds to sulfuric acid.

might enhance existing passive treatment technologies or be de-veloped for novel alternative bioremediation strategies (5, 6). AMD generation by the oxidation of pyrite can be described with four reactions. Pyrite is initially oxidized by oxygen (equa-tion 1) or Fe3 (equation 2), which produces acid and Fe2 ions.
Acidophiles are microorganisms that thrive in acidic environments, typically with a pH of 3 or lower. These organisms play a crucial role in biogeochemical processes, particularly in extreme environments where they can contribute to the cycling of elements like carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, influencing overall ecosystem dynamics.
